I guess for 40 years, a lot of the records I have listened to have been categorised as “indie.”

If you look at Wikipedia, or indeed pretty much any article on indie music, 1977 seems to be considered year zero, with the Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch being the prime example of the emerging  DIY  approach.   But, funnily enough, folk didn’t just hang around in the 60s and early 70s waiting for a deal either.  There was a plethora of people who took things into their own hands and put out records themselves, tiny, unpublicised releases, recorded on a shoestring and unheard by almost everyone.   However, many of these musical pioneers were genuine  innovators who made amazing records that preempt now familiar  sounds and sub-genres.

This blog will look at 12 songs that I have loved from the 80s onwards and compares each one to an earlier, obscure recording that shares much of the same DNA.   A gentle wind that connects different generations and different places.  I hope you enjoy the music and the stories.
